Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the country's most iconic landmarks. Sigiriya is also known as the "Lion Rock" due to the enormous lion-shaped gateway that once stood at the entrance of the fortress.
To reach the top of Sigiriya, visitors must climb a series of steep staircases and walkways carved into the rock. Along the way, you will encounter beautiful frescoes, known as the "Sigiriya maidens," depicting elegantly painted figures of women. These frescoes are a remarkable example of ancient Sri Lankan art and provide insights into the kingdom's culture and society.
The highlight of the Sigiriya experience is undoubtedly the panoramic view from the summit. The surrounding landscape, with its lush green forests, picturesque lakes, and distant mountains, creates a breathtaking vista that captivates visitors.
